Celebrity designer and Minnesota native Nate Berkus shares tips on making home spaces work for you

Home design, just like people, evolves through the years. Minnesota native and celebrity interior designer Nate Berkus is an expert at reimagining space for changing needs, whether that’s downsizing, moving or reimagining extra rooms as an empty nester.

“The story of what a successful interior communicates is who you are, who you’ve been, and who you aspire to be,” said Berkus, whose recent design partnerships include Amazon and PetSmart. We caught up with him on the phone from his home in New York, which he shares with husband and fellow interior design star Jeremiah Brent and their two young children.

Decorating small spaces | Homes

North America will see the tiny house market grow 57% by 2027, according to market research company Technavio.

With people buying more tiny homes, they also must consider how to decorate these homes. Furniture retailer Ballard Designs reports that 25% of those surveyed think smaller spaces are more challenging to decorate than larger spaces.

The Technavio report estimates the steady increase in the tiny home market will continue, considering the rise in housing prices and more interest in pre-built or custom-built homes.

Laundry Room Ideas for a Beautiful and Organized space

Ashley Macuga of Collected Interiors in San Carlos, California, drew upon her New Orleans heritage when selecting Rebecca Atwood’s Marbled Ferns wallpaper for this laundry room. “It was the first selection we made of the laundry room, and was the inspiration for all that followed,” she says. She then selected a Visual Comfort pendant light to add depth and warmth, and explains that the custom flooring from Los Angeles–based Arto Brick was “deeply functional, as there are a lot of dirty cleats that are washed in the farmhouse sink.”

5 Design Ideas for More Harmonious Multigenerational Living

The pandemic saw many American families with adult children share space temporarily, but the trend toward multigenerational living is here to stay. According to the Pew Research Institute, the number of cross-generational households in the United States has grown four times over since the 1970s. Home design ideas: A carefully considered shade of blue helps turn a staid den into an all-day haven

The objectives for the den in this Newton Colonial were contradictory: It needed to feel fresh and invigorating in the morning, but warm and cozy at night. Sarah Henley’s solution? Painting the room in Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue. “This intensely saturated blue is both bright and rich,” the designer says. “The room is luminous in the daytime, but moody after dark.” Painting the walls and woodwork the same color also made the space feel cohesive. “Before, navy walls and white trim made the room look choppy and disjointed,” Henley says. “Now it’s a beautiful jewel box.”
